Alleghany County School Board Names Sharon Elementary School Principal


The Alleghany County School Board has appointed Mr. Thomas “Ty” Dobbs to serve as the principal at Sharon Elementary School effective July 1, 2019.

            “I am very excited at the opportunity to work with the great staff and community at Sharon Elementary.  Sharon is an exceptional school, and I can think of no better place to begin my new experience as a Principal,” stated Dobbs.  “Mr. Callahan has done a remarkable job as the Principal at Sharon over the past several years, and I look forward to working hard to continue that success.” 

            “Mr. Dobbs is an excellent administrator and is truly a team player,” stated Superintendent Kotulka.  “He is very passionate, is focused on students and building positive relationships with staff and students. I look to forward to working with him in his new position.”

Mr. Dobbs is the proud graduate of Alleghany High School.  Upon graduation, he attended Radford University where he received his undergraduate degree in Exercise, Sport and Health Education.  Dobbs spent two-years working for Botetourt County Public Schools as a Health and Physical Education teacher before returning to his alma mater in 2007.  Dobbs taught Health and Physical Education and Driver’s Education until 2014.  During his seven-years in the classroom at AHS, Dobbs was the Varsity Softball Coach and Assistant Varsity Boys’ Basketball coach.  He was awarded Blue Ridge District Softball Coach of the Year in 2015 and led the team to a district championship.  To complete his accolades, Dobbs was the 2014-2015 High School Teacher of the Year for Alleghany County Public Schools.

In 2010, Dobbs completed his graduate degree from Radford University in Administration and Supervision.  In 2014, Dobbs served as Interim Assistant Principal at AHS and was appointed Assistant Principal/Athletic Director at AHS. This current school year, Dobbs was promoted to Assistant Principal at the high school.

“I cannot express how much Alleghany High School has meant to me over the past several years.  The faculty and staff there are wonderful. I appreciate the support and guidance from Mr. Dwayne Ross, Principal at Alleghany High School, over the past several years.  It has been a great privilege to work for not only a great Principal, but also a wonderful person.”  Dobbs concluded, “I am grateful for this new opportunity and for the confidence and support that the staff at Sharon Elementary, Mr. Kotulka, and the Alleghany County School Board have placed in me to continue to promote the success of Sharon Elementary and Alleghany County Public Schools.”
