            All teacher assistants in Alleghany County Public Schools shall have a high school diploma or the equivalent and meet one of the following guidelines:


  1. Complete two years of study at an institution of higher education; or
  2. Obtain an associate’s (or higher) degree; or
  3. Meet a rigorous standard of quality and be able to demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics (or, as appropriate, reading readiness, writing, readiness, and mathematics readiness).


            Employees who elect option #3 as the means by which they shall meet job qualifications must attain a passing score on the ParaPro assessment, as established by the Virginia Board of Education.  All teacher assistants must attain one of these qualifications by June 30 of the year of employment or assignment.


            The School Board shall underwrite the cost of the first administration of the ParaPro assessment for each teacher assistant who elects to take it.  Teacher assistants who fail to attain a passing score on their first administration of the ParaPro shall be required to pay for costs associated with any subsequent administrations.
