Alleghany School Board Appoints Acting Superintendent


At its regular meeting on December 15, 2014, the Alleghany County School Board appointed Mary Jane Mutispaugh to serve as the division acting superintendent, effective January 2, 2015. Mrs. Mutispaugh currently serves as the Director of Instruction.

Mrs. Mutispaugh received her Bachelor of Arts degree in social science from James Madison University in 1975. She later earned her Masters of Education in educational administration, also from James Madison University, in 1987. She completed her Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies Education Specialist degree from Virginia Tech in 2001. Mrs. Mutispaugh was a classroom teacher for fifteen years, teaching civics, social studies, and math. From 1994-1997 she served as principal of Lylburn Downing Middle School in Lexington and then principal at Parry McCluer Middle School in Buena Vista from 1997-2001. She joined the Alleghany County Public Schools administration team in 2001 as the Director of Instruction.

When asked about her appointment as acting superintendent, Mrs. Mutispaugh stated, “I am honored by the trust placed in me by the School Board with this appointment. I have had the privilege of working the past fourteen years with Dr. Sarah Campbell, whose dedication to the students of Alleghany County Public Schools has been unwavering. I wish her well in her retirement and look forward to continuing her commitment to the students, staff and parents of our school system."

School Board Chairman Randy Tucker stated, “The school board appreciates Ms. Mutispaugh’s willingness to serve as the acting superintendent until a new superintendent is hired.”
