Being appointed the Superintendent of Alleghany County Public Schools is certainly an honor and a privilege. I cannot imagine a greater professional accomplishment than being selected to lead the school division to which I have devoted my entire 32-year career as an educator. Alleghany County Public Schools is among the top performing school divisions in the state. Our division and each of our schools have met both state and federal performance goals for several years. Our staff has worked tirelessly to make a difference in the instructional lives of each of our students. I am proud to say that I have been a part of this success and I am humbled by the fact that I will have the opportunity to lead this outstanding school division as we face the challenges of the future. Words cannot express how much I have benefitted from being a professional in Alleghany County Public Schools. Our Board has consistently supported my efforts to grow professionally and there have been several key individuals who have guided my development as an administrator. Helen Jean Fitzgerald was my role model while I was an elementary principal. Joe Carpenter was my mentor when I became a central office administrator and Dr. Grimesey was responsible for allowing me to expand my leadership skills in my role as Assistant Superintendent for Instruction. I am grateful for each and every opportunity that the division has afforded me during my career. I want to thank Dr. Grimesey for allowing me the freedom to grow in my current role as Assistant Superintendent for Instruction. I want to thank my esteemed colleagues for their hard work and devotion to our students. I want to thank my family and friends for being there to support me throughout my career. Finally, I want to thank each member of the School Board for choosing me to be the next Superintendent of Alleghany County Public Schools. I look forward to serving as your Superintendent and I thank you for this opportunity.”

Mr. Fridley congratulated Dr. Campbell. He stated her 32 years of experience and leadership proves that she is the right choice for the position. He added he is proud to serve on the Board and looks forward to working with Dr. Campbell.

Mr. Barbour stated he is looking forward to working with Dr. Campbell and fully expects the schools to move forward with its goals and to remain as one of the top school divisions in the state.

Mrs. Bryant thanked Dr. Grimesey for his past eight years of leadership and experience. She stated the school division is fortunate to appoint Dr. Campbell to lead and guide the division.

Mr. Whitehead congratulated Dr. Campbell and stated he had heard at a VSBA meeting that the most important decision a School Board can make is to appoint a superintendent. He stated he believes they made the right decision eight years ago with Dr. Grimesey and believes they have made the right decision this time as well. He said his term on the School Board will end June 30 so he will not have the opportunity to work directly with Dr. Campbell but that she would certainly remain in his thoughts and prayers.

Ms. Adcock stated she is excited about Dr. Campbell’s appointment and appreciates always getting immediate, thorough answers from her when she has questions about something. She added Dr. Campbell knows the system and programs well. Ms. Adcock concluded that she has full confidence in Dr. Campbell.

Mr. Halsey stated Dr. Campbell was on the top of the list when considering replacing Dr. Grimesey. He added it is good to have someone in the division who knows the community, schools and personnel. He thanked Mr. Tucker for his leadership in the process of appointing a new superintendent.

Dr. Grimesey stated Dr. Campbell has been the “chief architect of our school division’s plan of academic success” and that he fully supports the Board’s decision in her appointment. He added he will assist her in any way to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Mr. Tucker stated the division is very fortunate to have such a talented individual to fill this position. He stated the Board considered doing a state or national superintendent search but decided it was not needed when it had someone of Dr. Campbell’s caliber within the division already. He added he believes there will be a smooth transition and thanked Dr. Campbell for accepting the position.
